The Federal Government is set to receive 268 Nigerians evacuated from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks targeting foreigners in the country.
The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, will represent the government during the reception of the returnees at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
A statement by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, said Nigeria’s Acting High Commissioner in Pretoria, Ambassador Alexander Ajayi, will accompany the first batch of evacuees and officially hand them over to the minister.
The Air Peace flight carrying the returnees is expected to arrive in Lagos at about 5:00 a.m.
The ministry also announced that the registration and screening exercise for Nigerians who wish to voluntarily return home due to the attacks has been extended to Sunday, June 14, 2026, to allow more affected citizens to participate.
It added that the extension demonstrates the government’s commitment to protecting the welfare of Nigerians living abroad.
The ministry further stated that relevant government agencies have made arrangements for the reception, documentation, and support of the evacuees upon arrival.
