Starmer, Badenoch Condemn Ban on Israeli Fans Ahead of Villa–Maccabi Europa Clash

UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, has criticised the decision to bar supporters of Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv from attending their UEFA Europa League fixture against Aston Villa, describing it as “the wrong decision.”

His comment followed strong condemnation from Opposition Leader, Kemi Badenoch, who labelled the move “a national disgrace,” arguing that it sent “a horrendous and shameful message” suggesting that there are places in Britain “where Jews simply cannot go.”

The ban, imposed by Birmingham City Council’s Safety Advisory Group (SAG) and backed by West Midlands Police, prevents Maccabi fans from attending the November 6 game at Villa Park. The decision reportedly stemmed from safety concerns about potential protests around the stadium.

Reacting on X (formerly Twitter), Starmer faulted the local authorities for yielding to pressure rather than guaranteeing adequate protection for all fans.

“This is the wrong decision. We will not tolerate antisemitism on our streets. The role of the police is to ensure all football fans can enjoy the game, without fear of violence or intimidation,” he wrote.

Aston Villa confirmed on Thursday that the SAG, after consulting with police, had ordered that no away fans be allowed for the fixture. The club said it has remained in communication with both Maccabi Tel Aviv and local officials, prioritising the safety of spectators and residents.

Badenoch, in a separate post on X, challenged the government to act decisively, saying the ban reflected a failure to uphold its promise of protection for British Jews.

“This is a national disgrace. How have things come to this? Starmer pledged that Jews are welcome and safe in Britain… If not, it sends a horrendous and shameful message: there are parts of Britain where Jews simply cannot go,” she wrote.

As of Friday, neither UEFA nor Maccabi Tel Aviv had issued an official statement regarding the matter.
