Defending champions Kano Pillars began their title defence in dominant fashion as they and Niger FC emerged the standout teams on the opening day of the Nigeria Amputee Football Championship in Abuja.
Pillars edged Plateau FC 2–1 in a thrilling opener. Bethel Emmanuel scored twice for the champions, while Abdullahi Mohammed briefly levelled for Plateau before Emmanuel restored the lead late in the game.
In another match, Niger FC defeated debutants Gida Gida FC 1–0, thanks to a decisive strike from Mohammed Nasiru. Despite Gida Gida’s spirited display, Niger’s experience proved the difference as they secured all three points.
Kano Pillars later returned to the field to record a convincing 3–0 win over Kaduna FC in their second game of the day, underlining their determination to retain the title.
Speaking after the matches, President of the Nigeria Amputee Football Federation, Paul Maduakor, commended the high level of competition and organisation, describing the championship as a vital platform for talent discovery ahead of the Amputee Football World Cup.
“I’m impressed with the enthusiasm and quality on display. We’re confident this competition will help us identify top talents for the World Cup,” he said.
The Federation’s Technical Director, Victor Nwenwe, also praised the new entrants for their promising performances, saying the tournament reflects the growth of amputee football in Nigeria.
Six teams are competing in this year’s edition — Kano Pillars, Kaduna FC, Niger FC, Plateau FC, Gida Gida FC, and Kano Pillars 2 — with the championship continuing this week in Abuja.
