Zico Names Jay-Jay Okocha Among Africa’s Greatest Footballers

Brazilian football legend Zico has described former Super Eagles captain, Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha, as one of the greatest footballers Africa has ever produced.

Speaking on the latest episode of John Obi Mikel’s Obi One Podcast on Thursday, Zico said Okocha’s creativity and flair made him unforgettable among football fans around the world.

“I like Okocha, a fantastic player. Number 10, Okocha. Eto’o, fantastic. George Weah, Drogba,” the Brazilian icon said while reflecting on the best African players he had watched.

Zico, often referred to as the “White Pelé,” was a key figure in Brazilian football during the 1970s and 1980s, celebrated for his technical brilliance, playmaking vision, and goal-scoring prowess. He remains one of the most respected voices in world football and continues to influence the game through coaching and punditry.

The 71-year-old said he had always admired Okocha’s unique style of play, which he described as “fantastic,” praising the Nigerian’s ability to entertain and dominate games with skill and confidence.

Okocha, who captained Nigeria’s Super Eagles and starred for clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and Bolton Wanderers, is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most skillful midfielders of all time.
