India Beats Nigeria to Win Bid for 2030 Commonwealth Games

India has been selected to host the 2030 Centenary Commonwealth Games, edging out Nigeria’s Abuja in a closely contested race between the two nations.

The Commonwealth Sport Executive Board announced on Wednesday that Amdavad (Ahmedabad), located in India’s western state of Gujarat, has been recommended as the official host city for the Games, pending final approval at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly scheduled for November 26, 2025, in Glasgow.

According to the Board, both bids reflected inspiring visions for the future of the Commonwealth Games, but India’s proposal stood out for its focus on innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity as the event marks 100 years since the first Games in 1930.

“After careful consideration, the Board is recommending Amdavad as host for the Centenary Games — a decision that marks a significant milestone as we look to the next century of Commonwealth sport,” said Dr. Donald Rukare, Interim President of Commonwealth Sport.

This victory means Amdavad will become the first Indian city in more than two decades to host the event, following New Delhi’s 2010 edition.

Nigeria Eyes 2034 Bid

Although Nigeria’s Abuja missed out on the 2030 slot, its campaign was praised for its ambition and unity. Commonwealth officials confirmed that discussions are ongoing to position Nigeria as a strong contender for the 2034 Games.

Nigeria’s Minister of Sports, Shehu Dikko, said the country remains proud of its effort:
“While we are disappointed not to have been recommended for 2030, our bid reflected a national consensus that sport must drive economic growth and unity. We will build on this foundation as we prepare for future hosting opportunities.”

Looking Ahead

The 2030 Games will follow the 2026 edition in Glasgow, with Commonwealth Sport CEO Katie Sadleir describing India’s selection as a strategic step forward that will celebrate 100 years of Commonwealth unity while embracing the next generation of athletes and fans.

If ratified, the Games will serve as a major highlight in India’s “Viksit Bharat 2047” national vision, showcasing the country’s global sporting capability and youth-driven progress.
