Cristiano Ronaldo Nears 1,000 Career Goals Milestone

Portuguese superstar and Al Nassr forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, is on the brink of making football history as the first male player to score 1,000 career goals.

According to a report by Sky Sports on Wednesday, Ronaldo’s brace against Hungary in the World Cup qualifiers has pushed his total career goals to 948 — comprising 805 at club level and 143 for Portugal.

The 40-year-old also set a new record as the highest goalscorer in World Cup qualifying history, overtaking Guatemala’s Carlos Ruiz (39 goals). Argentina’s Lionel Messi currently sits third on the list with 36 goals.

Despite his age, Ronaldo continues to defy expectations. Competing in the Saudi Pro League, he has found the net 104 times in 117 appearances over four seasons with Al Nassr. So far in 2025 alone, he has scored 32 goals across all competitions — maintaining the same relentless consistency that has defined his career.

Since 2010, Ronaldo has averaged over 50 goals per year, with his most prolific year being 2013, when he scored 69 goals and won the Ballon d’Or. Remarkably, his annual goal tally has dipped below 39 only once in the past 15 years.

With Portugal on course to qualify for next summer’s World Cup and two years left on his Al Nassr contract, projections suggest Ronaldo could reach the 1,000-goal milestone by October 2026 if he maintains his current scoring rate — a feat that would cement his place as the most prolific goalscorer in football history.
