The Osun State Police Command has arrested two individuals in connection with the death of a 14-year-old boy and injuries to three others during a funeral in Ilesa, Osun State.
Spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi confirmed that the suspects have been moved to the command headquarters in Osogbo, where an investigation is ongoing to determine the immediate and remote causes of the shooting.
“One person was shot dead, and three others were injured. Two of the injured have been discharged,” Ojelabi said.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the shooting was an accidental discharge by a security guard from the Nigerian Forest Security Service who was performing a gun salute at the event. The ceremony ended abruptly as panic ensued among attendees.
The Osun State Commander of the Nigeria Forest Service, Mr. Hammed Nureni, stated that the operative involved came from Plateau State and reiterated that the incident was accidental, urging calm while authorities conduct a thorough probe.
The incident comes despite recent advocacy by security agencies on the safe use of firearms. Previously, the Osun State Police had warned hunters and firearm users against mishandling guns, emphasizing that loaded firearms should not be kept in homes or used recklessly.
Authorities continue to investigate and urge residents to report firearm-related incidents promptly to prevent future tragedies.
