The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested five youths for conducting an unauthorized marriage ceremony without parental consent.
According to Dr. Mujahideen Aminuddeen, Deputy Commander General of the board, the arrested included the bride, groom, and three others who acted as witnesses and representatives. The union reportedly involved a dowry of ₦10,000, falling below the minimum recognized under Islamic law, and violated both legal and religious marriage procedures.
The board has launched a full investigation, and Dr. Aminuddeen called on parents to actively monitor their children’s social engagements and provide guidance on marriage.
The arrests come ahead of Kano State’s mass wedding programme, which aims to formally marry at least 2,000 couples. All intending participants are required to register and undergo compulsory medical screenings to ensure their health and eligibility.
